As a founding member of CERN since 1954, Belgium has made many important contributions to experimental particle physics. Belgian teams have been involved in major experiments using all accelerators and colliders at CERN. A landmark achievement was the Belgian contribution to the Gargamelle neutrino experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron, which discovered the weak neutral current. Belgian theoretical physicist Léon van Hove served as Director-General, jointly with John B. Adams, from 1976 until 1980. More recently, the Nobel Prize in Physics 2013 was awarded jointly to our Belgian compatriot François Englert, and Peter W. Higgs, for the discovery of the Higgs mechanism.

At present CERN comprises 23 Member States. Two delegates represent each Member State in the CERN Council, the supreme governing body of the Organization. Recently, a Management Liaison has also been designated for each country to help maintain dialogue and promote information between the Member States.

Being Belgian myself, I have the honor to fulfill this role and be the new link between CERN and Belgium.
